- Abstract
The two-child family is a widespread ideal. It is, however, not a matter of course. Based on Miller's Traits-Desires-Intentions-Behavior model, this paper investigates the motives of people for desiring a second child and how these motives may influence the progression towards intending this first family extension. The study uses secondary analyses of problem-centered interviews that are based on grounded theory methodology. As a result, four types of motives are identified. The second child may be interpreted as (a) a necessary component of the traditional family setting, as (b) a matter of course, (c) as a first sibling, and as (d) a "doubled" first child. Each of these motives has been scrutinized with regard to the specific circumstances causing people to intend having a second child. It is shown that identifying the respective motives for having a second child leads to a better understanding of the circumstances upon which particular actors start planning to actually have a second child.
