- Abstract
Purpose: Measurement of normal maximum mouth opening (MMO) is an important diagnostic criterion in the evaluation of the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to determine the MMO and maximum lateral opening (MLO) for the young Indian adult population, and to assess the variation of MMO and MLO with age and gender. Materials and Methods: Assessment of MMO and MLO was accomplished using a modified Vernier Caliper, by measuring the distance between the incisal edges of the maxillary and mandibular incisors during maximal mouth opening up to the painless limit and intercommisural distance at maximum vertical opening respectively. The study consisted of a total of 207 adults, 100 males and 107 females, in the age range of 20 to 40 years. For each subject three readings were recorded in millimetres and the mean value was considered. Results: The results of the present study revealed that mean MMO for males and females was 44.7±.57 mm and 42.3±.53 mm respectively. The mean MLO for males and females was 48.9±.59mm and 46.9±.52 mm respectively. Summary and Conclusions: Significant associations were observed in between age, gender and MMO and MLO. P value of < 0.05 was considered to be significant.
