- Abstract
Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive inflammatory process causing irreversible atrophy of the pancreatic parenchyma and fibrosis, which leads to pancreatic exocrine and later endocrine dysfunction. Nutritional management of CP is an integral part of treatment. There is a kind of "vicious circle" developed between nutrition and CP - on one hand poor nutrition including alcohol abuse affects the severity of the disease, on the other the symptoms of CP including pain make proper nutrition difficult. The aim of nutritional treatment is to maintain adequate body weight, avoiding exacerbations and preventing pain and oxidative stress. The guidelines established by experts promote the choice of adequate management. Enteral nutrition which started early when the exacerbation occurred, supplies the body with adequate amount of calories, microelement deficits supplementation and antioxidants administration - all the measures provide the basis for nutrition in chronic pancreatitis. Giving up any alcohol consumption is among very important recommendations. When exacerbations have occurred the management is the same as in case of acute pancreatitis.
