The article discusses the large-scale de-registrations of nonprofit organizations in South Africa in 2014. Particular focus is given to the dependence of many non-profit organizations on donor funding and its risk for many vulnerable beneficiaries being served by the groups. The use of registration in terms of the Nonprofit Organisations (NPO) Act to access donor funding is highlighted.
