- Abstract
The precarization of employment signifies a massive unsettling of biographical models: Although the normal biography was once already thought dispensed with and replaced with the "patchwork biography," its erosion in the context of increasing precarity in the labor market has again become a theme of the social sciences. For the last few years, the perspective on the disruptive effects of the loss of continuous employment and of corresponding biographical perspectives has become dominant. Today, however, the opportunities for reconfiguring work and life opened by precarization and its inherent erosion of the normal biography are emphasized. Individual interpretations of "life" have thus far not been adequately investigated. Based on biographical reconstructions, this contribution examines the biographical interpretation of members of the precariat whose approach to "life" and its link to the laboring society can be expected to be the most pronounced. The results not only show that this connection is socio-historical—as a social institution of the life course—but also that one aspect (life) cannot be conceived of without the other (the sociey of labor) and that the subjects reflect this.
