- Abstract
The article focuses on the acquisition of for-profit corporation Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. by multi-national conglomerate Unilever Group in the U.S. in 2000. It notes that Ben & Jerry's Homemade was considered as the darling proponents of social entrepreneurship and social enterprise and pursued a double bottom line approach. It states that this double bottom line approach seeks to advance progressive social goals while yielding an acceptable financial return for investors. It adds that the acquisition makes several claims including the rejection of the assertion that corporate law obliged the sale or sellout, the inclination of publicly-traded corporate form towards profit-maximization and the steps taken by socially-oriented founders to resist takeovers.
