- Abstract
This article presents information on the Artificial Kidney-Chronic Uremia Program of the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases, which took place in the year 1971. During the intervening four years the mysteries of uremic toxins have not been unraveled even though additional knowledge has evolved. Because of the high cost of dialytic treatment on one hand and since the burden of funding has shifted to the Federal government of the U.S. on the other, it is possible to foresee that pressures would develop to limit the overall weekly treatment time of patients or to increase overall weekly treatment time.
