The article reflects on the role of the Bible and tradition in Protestant thought as a way of thinking about pre-modern culture. Topics discussed include the evolution of the Reformation biblical text; the connection between biblical exegesis and the creation of historical identity; the nature of the Reformation Bible as a revolutionary form of textual authority; and how biblical interpretation shaped concepts of church reform.
