- Abstract
To speak of memory implies an approach to time and space at both an individual and collective level because, calling up memories, brings events to the present. The past is updated in an effort to reject forgetfulness, annul distance and recuperate the past that justifies our present. The aim of this work is to show how memory, before 1640, was a resource to activate the lost identity of novo-Hispanic Crypto-Jews. However, after that period, it was a valuable information tool for the inquisitors, which Jews dosed out during each trial to delay their sentencing. The different meanings of memory show the level of pressure and censure the inquisitorial system exerted upon them, for which memories took on size and new meaning, depending on their convenience at the time.
