- Title
Amherst Professor Joseph Haven and His Influence on America's Great Social Critic, Thorstein Veblen.
- Authors
Vaughn, Gerald F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the influence of Reverend Joseph Haven, professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy in Amherst College in Massachusetts, on the intellectual development of social critic Thorstein Veblen. Mid-nineteenth century reviewers commend the book "Mental Philosophy" authored by Haven. Inductive reasoning characterized the research and writings of Veblen on institutional economics. The personality of Haven as a free-thinker must have been an appealing model for Veblen.
