The author describes his two young American chestnut trees. He relates that the trees reached about 18 inches in height. A wall was then formed within one foot of one of the trees. The tree in the shelter of the woodpile had put on another foot of height. Such tree is described as healthy and thriving while its companion had probably gained another inch or so.
