Karlan, Pamela S.
- Abstract
The author reflects on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a 1963 demonstration that called for equal rights for minorities in the U.S.. Details are provided on activist Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech as well as how the event impacted the development of American constitutional law. The Second Reconstruction, a series of transformative bills such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, is discussed with particular attention given to how the statutes promoted constitutional values of liberty and equality.
