- Abstract
The famous Polish slavist, Aleksander Brückner, since 1881 professor at the University of Berlin, following the Prussian Minister's advice abstained in public for more than thirty years from any political comments. By outbreak of the First World War he began, inspired by Wilhelm Feldman, the delegate of the Supreme National Committee and Józef Piłsudski's Legions, with a campaign in favor of the restitution of Poland under German auspices, making his voice heard in books and numerous articles in newspapers and periodicals. This paper describes Brückner's over the four years of war widespread activity in cooperation with Feldman and as coauthor in the review 'Polnische Blätter', and shows the reasons why Brückner despite the rebirth of the Polish state in 1918 did not leave his Alma Mater and Berlin.
