- Title
'Twilight or Dawn?" Observations on Werfel's Exile As Reflected in His Letters.
- Authors
Steiman, Lionel B.
- Abstract
The article presents observations on the exile of author Franz Werfel in the U.S. that is reflected in his letters. His exile was one of the happiest and most productive period of his life. He was able to adapt the way of life in the U.S. with ease because his identity was never bound exclusively or even primarily with any national homeland. As a Jew he had moved from one minority status to another. Werfel was able to transcend his conflict-laden origins and ambiguous commitments in a mystical religiosity in which otherwise irreconcilable differences were resolved.
