- Abstract
"Charlottengrad: Russian Culture in Weimar Berlin" by Roman Utkin explores the significance of the Russian Poets' Club and other cultural spaces in 1920s Berlin. Utkin argues that these exchanges were influential in Russian cultural history, as Berlin became a hub for Russian emigrants after the Russian revolution. The book challenges the idea that Russian and Soviet culture completely diverged after the revolution, showing that both "Reds" and "Whites" were present in Berlin and engaged in discussions about the future of Russia. Utkin also examines the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in Berlin and the artistic freedoms and cultural mixity that the city offered. While the book could have delved deeper into the ethnic dimension of the Berlin experience and the social dynamics of the community, it is still a valuable resource for historians and literary specialists.
