Digging In for the Long Haul: How to Get a Handle on the Embedded Word Indexing Utilities Out There.
- Authors
Haskins, Lucie
- Abstract
The article focuses on the features of Microsoft Word's embedded indexing utilities. The author reviewed four of these utilities: DEXter, IndexAssistant, Power Index, and WordEmbed. They vary in cost, general availability, and functionality but they all provide features absent in Word. DEXter is the newest kid on the block but it provides the most comprehensive functionality of the four utilities tested. It uses a table approach reminiscent of IXgen for FrameMaker. This multi-columned table is used for all input and editing. Once editing has been completed, the table entries are embedded into the Word document. This approach allows a lot of flexibility in how input and editing are handled. IndexAssistant packs a huge wallop for its miniscule price tag. IndexAssistant showed solid functionality, all originating from a single dialog box. Microsoft Word's embedded indexing features are very simplistic. Word does not allow previewing the index as it is being built. Its editing features are practically nonexistent. Data entry is time-consuming and tedious.
