- Abstract
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder affecting one in every 10 adults worldwide; and it is expected that the number of people with diabetes will reach 643 million in 2030. Management of diabetes involve regular monitoring of blood glucose levels; however, current home-based blood glucose monitoring systems involve finger piercing which is painful for the patient and may cause possible infection on the pierced site. Hence, there is a need to find non-invasive methods for measurement of blood sugar levels. The non-invasive blood glucose monitoring (NIBGM) system reported in this study consists of a photo-emitter and a photo-detector circuit that uses 1550nm light emitting diodes as transmitter-receiver pair. Tests using standard glucose control solutions show a very strong correlation between the output voltage of the NIBGM system and glucose concentration, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.9877. Clarke error grid analysis indicate that glucose measurements obtained from the NIBGM system are generally accurate.
