- Abstract
The folktale ATU 713, The Mother Who Did Not Bear Me but Nourished Me, introduced to the international catalogue by Paul Delarue, includes a small number of versions, all French (Nivernais and South-West) apart from one story from the island of Mallorca. In this paper we put forward the hypothesis that this tale was created relatively recently in the region of Nivernais and Morvan which, in the nineteenth century, was home to a large number of nurses. This activity forced women into temporary exile, but allowed them to generate a certain level of financial comfort for their return to their place of origin. The tale sublimates the heroine's servitude with the abundance for which she has left her home to work. The story was subsequently introduced to the south-west of France, which did not have the same economic constraints, and it thus evolved to include, albeit precariously, a legendary motif which paradoxically allows it to maintain its status as a tale of magic.
