Rifondazione Comunista: a party of protest or a party of government?

- Abstract
The entire history of the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (PRC) was marked by the long standing dilemma faced by all sizeable parties of the radical left, whether to be a party of government or a party of protest. This tension was aggravated by the heterogeneous nature of the forces that created it in 1991, an amalgam of leftist but governmentally-orientated currents from the Partito Comunista Italiano with far left activists linked to the Italian protest movements of the 1960s and 1970s. All the PRC's major splits were caused by disagreements over whether to support, or even join, governments backed by the more moderate left or to act as the parliamentary voice of protest movements. The PRC survived splits in 1995 and 1998 over whether to give external support to Berlusconi's more moderate opponents but ultimately its entry into the Prodi government of 2006-8 destroyed it as a serious electoral force.
