- Abstract
The phytoplankton community composition and bio-diversity of Mukkadal reservoir was studied for a period of one year on a monthly basis between March 2022 and February 2023. In the present study, the maximum number of phytoplankton recorded in Mukkadal reservoir was Anabena sp., Oscillatioria sp., Navicula sp., Fragilaria sp., Phacus sp., Euglena sp. A total of four classes and twenty species were identified. Phytoplankton filaments were counted using a hemocytometer counting cell. Cyanophyceae algae were recorded of 5 genera Anabaena sp., Oscillatoria sp., Geitlerinema splendidum sp., Chroococcus Turgidus sp., Nodularia sp. recorded was 25%. Chlorophyceae class were recorded of 5 genera Monoraphidium sp., Radiosphaera dissecta sp., Scenedesmus sp., Ulothrix acuminata sp., Palmella sp. recorded was 30%. Bacillriophyceae class were recorded of 5 genera Navicula sp., Fragilaria sp., Pinnularia sp., Diatom sp., Synedra sp., recorded was 26%. Eugleophyceae class were recorded of 5 genera Euglena sp., Phacus sp., Lepocinclis salina sp., Trachelomonas sp., Peranema sp., recorded was 19%. During the study, it was found that Chlorophyceae dominated the algal growth over Cyanophyceae, Bacillarophyceae and Euglenophyceae.
