- Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a short treatment with progesterone (J-Synch+eCG) on pregnancy rate inheifers artificial inseminated according to heat detecting. Black and red Aberdeen Angus heifers, 15-17 months of age (n= 510)were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments:1) Conventional (n=264): On day 0, the heifers received an intravaginal device with0.5 g of progesterone plus 2 mg of estradiol benzoate. On day 8, the device was removed and 0.150 mg of D-Cloprostenol and 0.5mg of estradiol cypionate were injected. 2) J-Synch+eCG: On day 1, an intravaginal device was inserted (0.5 g of progesterone)plus 2 mg of estradiol benzoate. On day 6, device was removal, 0.150 mg of Cloprostenol and 300 IU of equine chorionicgonadotrophin were injected and tails painted for estrus detection. In the conventional treatment, FTAI was performed at 48-56hours after device removal and in the J-Synch+eCG, artificial insemination was performed at 62 hours in the heifers in heat (≥30%removal of paint rub-off) and the rest, at 72 hours. The pregnancy diagnosis was conducted on 42 (J-Synch+eCG) and 43 days(Conventiontal). The effect of the treatment (J-Synch+eCG heat, J-Synch+eCG without heat and Conventional) and coat coloron pregnancy rate (Proc Logistic, SAS) was studied. The treatments tended to affect pregnancy rate (P=0.07). The J-Synch+eCG-heat had a higher pregnancy rate (65.5%) compared to J-Synch without heat (53.6%) and Conventional treatments (56.7%). Thecolor coat not affect pregnancy rate. It is concluded that animals that are treated with the J-Synch + eCG treatment, which aredetected in heat at the 62 hour and are inseminated at that time tend to have a higher pregnancy rate than those that they receivethe conventional treatment without eCG and FTAI at 48-56 h without discriminated of heat.
