- Abstract
The article discusses the role played by African American pioneers in the exploration and settlement of the Western U.S. frontier. The author traces the origins of this exploration to Estevanico, a slave in a Spanish conquistador's 1527 exploration of Florida. He goes on to note the involvement of York, slave of William Clark, in the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. Other topics addressed include African American involvement in the fur trade and mountain man Peter Ranne.
