- Title
Constraints on a Broadcast Innovation: Zenith's Phonevision System, 1931-1972.
- Authors
Bellamy, Jr., Robert V.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the failure of the Phonevision pay television system of Zenith Radio Corp. According to research conducted on the failure of Phonevision, the subscription television system failed because of the broadcast regulatory system of the U.S. and the opposition from the broadcast and motion picture industries. The first public demonstration of the Phonevision was carried out in Chicago, Illinois in 1947 but Zenith failed to capitalize on the Phonevision. It was again allowed by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to be tested in February 1950.
