- Title
Battling a Thousand Points of Might.
- Authors
KIMMELMAN, JONATHAN
- Abstract
The author comments on the effort of Paul Applebaum, Charles Lidz and Robert Klitzman to lay out a conceptual model of voluntariness, with the goal of developing instruments for assessing its constraint. He mentions that the authors settle on a legally grounded conception of voluntariness, holding that decisions become involuntary when materially affected by external, intentional and illegitimate influences. He cites concerns with the formulation such as the attribution of material cause when events have not yet occurred.
