- Abstract
The essay discusses the role of confessions of addiction in literature in American culture. The author discusses the book "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey, which the author says is an example of addict-subject confession. The actions of talk show host Oprah Winfrey in interpreting Frey's book and projecting the meaning onto her audience is discussed. The controversy surrounding the fabrication of details in Frey's memoir and the self-help nature of Winfrey's show are discussed.
