- Abstract
This research aims to identify the interpretation of workers and shopkeepers of the Municipal Market of Uberlândia on the changes that occurred after the reform that revitalized it in 2008, in light of the theory of social representations. The theoretical apparatus provided by the approaches used by Moscovici (1978) e Jodelet (1989), proved adequate to state the reflections present in this work. The ethnographic method and the technique of semi-structured interviews were used for data collection and the fieldwork took place in 2015 between May and July. For organizational purposes, social representations were divided and categorized in themes involving (1) the physical structure, (2) the regulars and (3) concept (image and reputation). The present study made it possible to verify that the Municipal Market of Uberlândia is inserted in a complex environment that congregates different worldviews, but that paradoxically are in line to build a collective environment with common representations. As a result, we identified the most striking and obvious representation of an old and abandoned house that was replaced by a new house, comfortable and cozy, whose doors are open to welcome visitors. This study presents relevance to the scientific community, because its findings, can contribute to characterize a common identity to the Municipal Markets existing in Brazil. In addition, the present study deepens the reflections on municipal markets in light of the Theory of Social Representations carried out in previous works.
