- Abstract
This article addressed the dynamics of trust in hybrid interorganizational arrangements based on the functionality of certification systems. Its approach developed a theoretical articulation on the role of signaling tools in cooperative interactions between businesses, offering an analysis of concepts and propositions from Information Economics and Transaction Cost Economics. Certifications in medium and long term hybrid arrangements are of particular relevance with regard to intrinsic attributes of products and processes, which cannot be verified through analysis of tangible characteristics. This particularity of agribusiness- related activities makes it difficult to identify opportunistic behavior by agents, hindering proper retaliation when breaches of trust takes place. Managerial implications involve organizational behavior regarding certification systems as a way of strengthening relationships so as to enhance individual agents' performance. Moreover, this analytical exercise suggests that government intervention in this context can maximize aggregate sectoral competitiveness in the agribusiness context.
