- Abstract
The present study examined relations between secondary students' perceived participation opportunities in math class, perceived math teachers' social support, perceived structuredness in math class and students interest in math. Thereby the role of students' gender for these relations was analysed. Questionnaire data from 424 students in grades 8, 9, and 10 (46.6 % female) attending ten public schools located in Berlin, Germany were analysed. Structural equation modelling revealed significant relations between student perceptions of math teachers' social support, perceived structuredness of math class and students' interest in math. Multiple group analysis showed that features of instruction related differently to math interest for males and females. Results suggested that educational settings that aim to promote mathematics interest should take into account gender-specific learning processes.
