- Abstract
The article discusses the roles of DICER-LIKE2 (DCL2) in plants, specifically its involvement in small interfering RNA (siRNA) biogenesis and its effects on basal antiviral resistance and development. It has been assumed that the effects of DCL2 are related to its production of 22-nt siRNAs, but this hypothesis has not been confirmed. The study found that the developmental defects caused by DCL2 activity can be partially uncoupled from the production of 22-nt siRNAs, suggesting that something else is causing these effects. The authors propose that the accumulation of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggers an innate immunity response, leading to both basal antiviral resistance and developmental defects.
