- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the political structure and history of the Andes region of Ecuador throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. Details are given highlighting the nation's privatized governmental system in the northern rural areas, outlining a system referred to as "state-by-proxy." A review is given of the political history of the nation through the 20th century, mapping the hacienda system and its various periods of reform. Analysis is also given discussing the structural characteristics of the system and its causes.
