- Abstract
Interpersonal violence against people with disabilities detrimentally impacts clients' ability to engage in the rehabilitation process and achieve vocational goals. This article focuses on the problem of interpersonal violence against people with disabilities and discusses implications for rehabilitation agencies. Information about the problem includes the following: (a) incidence; (b) physical and psychological impact on victims; (c) indicators of physical, sexual, financial and psychological violence; and (d) systemic and personal barriers to preventing violence. Strategies for prevention of interpersonal violence are grounded in the public health model of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and two multiple system level models of prevention: ecological model and spectrum of prevention. Specific strategies for preventing interpersonal violence are delineated in three areas: (a) improving rehabilitation organizational policies and practices; (a) fostering networks between rehabilitation agencies and crime victim services, businesses, and other community agencies; and (c) professional development to enhance rehabilitation professionals' competency to work with clients who are victims of interpersonal violence.
