- Abstract
Votive tablets were reported to be discovered in Perlis, Malaysia since the late 19th Century, and the discovery was published by Vaughan Stevens, I. H. N. Evan, H. D. Collings and Alastair Lamb. All of the votive tablets were either discovered in GuaKurong Batang and GuaBerhala, located around 1 mile from each other. The votive tablets discovered in Perlis are classified as the Type II of the Thai Pra-Bimh Buddhist Votive Tablet. Type II votive tablets was confined to the area of the Malay Peninsula related to the Art of Srivijaya. This type of votive tablet consists of circular of pear-shaped clay with Buddhist figures or inscriptions stamped on one side. The tablets are either sun dried or lightly fired. During the survey done by Alastair Lamb, he collected dozens of votive tablets from the two caves. Alastair Lamb reported the discovery of inscribed votive tablets from GuaKurong Batang and GuaBerhala of which those discovered in GuaKurong Batang were pretty much worn out. However, those votive tablets have yet to be deciphered. A small number those votive tablets are still being preserved in the Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum, of which a small number of them still have some characters visible. This paper presents decipherment of the tablets and discusses its parallelism with those discovered in Hund, Pakistan.
