- Abstract
Western women have always been committed to peace. Data on early twentieth century societies support the idea that, at least in the West, women were reluctant to support the militaristic policies, favoring peace goals and those related to traditional female roles. Around World War One, and although public opinion supported the idea that war was inevitable, many women exercised a peace activism. In the context of the First World War two Peace Women Congresses were held in Europe. Pacifism had however differences led to tensions among women agents coming from various countries. Nevertheless, almost a century later, international regulation, which had advanced regarding the two World Wars, lacked authority to prevent the harmful consequences of a possible conflict. Peace remained precarious. The Conference of September 1995 in Beijing, gave voice to thousands of women, representing millions of them aspiring to a peaceful world to consolidate its social visibility in the prosperity of their communities.
