- Abstract
Background: Campylobacter spp. is a zoonotic pathogen recognized like an important causal agent of human gastroenteritis (Campylobacteriosis) originated by consumption of contaminated food, especially chicken meat which has the highest prevalence of this pathogen. In Colombia, The Secretaría Distrital de Salud of Bogotá D. C reported a prevalence of Campylobacter spp., during the 2006 of 10,9 % in chicken carcasses and hen (n=184). However, in Ibagué and Tolima department, no reports were found of this microorganism in sale and distribution of chicken. Objectives: To determine the presence of Campylobacter spp. in samples of chickens in the four marketplaces of the city of Ibague. Methods: The locals were selected in the four marketplaces, according to the data recorded in the survey to diagnose BPM and volume of chicken's sales in every local. In each place two types of samples were taken: environmental sample (surface smear of knives, tables, trays and balance scale) and sample of chicken (skin-neck and viscera). A total of 6 samples were obtained by place sampled. The protocol applied for the isolation and detection of Campylobacter spp. was based on 10272-1 ISO: 2006, with some modifications. Results: At time, two of the four marketplaces (approximately 40-50% of the defined study area) were sampled obtaining a total of 43 samples, of which three (6.9%) have tested positive for Campylobacter spp. Samples in which was observed the presence of the microorganism corresponds to skin and chicken viscera. It has not been detected in samples from surfaces. Conclusions: The presence of Campylobacter spp. was determined in samples from chickens in marketplaces, suggesting the need to recommend adjustments in the application of BPM to control this pathogen in chicken, a food of high consumption in the country.
