- Title
Scientifilm and the Pulps: Developing a Composite Gaze.
- Authors
Telotte, J. P.
- Abstract
This article examines the early relationship between science fiction and film as it was reflected in the sf pulp magazines during the between-wars period. It draws on the reviews, editorial content, and letters to the editors to sketch the development of a growing understanding of the nature of the sf film--or what was commonly referred to in the pulps as "scientifilms." Drawing on the work of David Trotter and Francesco Casetti, it traces the impact of what has been termed the "composite gaze" of film, as it enters into and begins to influence thinking about sf in this period when the genre was starting to establish its identity.
