- Abstract
The description of the state of research at the castle of Cucagna is intended to publicise a project which has ambitious aims, including restoration of this extraordinary monument. The excellent state of preservation of the castle and a wealth of historical documents make it possible to research the territorial development of Friuli in the High Middle Ages, the castle's golden age between the 11th and the second half of the 13th century and the period of its decline down to the 15th century. The survey of the domestic areas and the evaluation of the significant finds mark the beginning of a phase of the project which is accompanied by a large-scale topographical survey of the development of the site as a whole. The central features are economic factors, the raison d'être and living conditions at the castle. The complex stages in construction and the significance of the material culture that has survived shed light on the developments and transformation of the castle. The excavations at Cucagna afford an introduction, shorn of any romantic overtones, to the phenomenon of fortified aristocratic seats of the High and Late Middle Ages, which goes beyond static illustrations of the castles situated in their territories.
