- Abstract
When health conditions change, negotiating whether to stay in or return to work is a complex social process in which heterogeneous actors and organizational structures interact. Accordingly, the success of integration is mainly negotiated in day-to-day business. In my article, I use the potential of qualitative-interpretive health research to focus on these everyday integration practices and to identify their patterns. Based on openly conducted interviews with a variety of corporate actors, I show that integration processes can be separated into four phases, each with characteristic events and actor constellations. It is evident that workplace practice is characterized by an interplay between formal-codified and informalvariable reactions to integration issues, and that direct supervisors are key actors for successful integration.
