- Title
MANX IDENTITY AND THE DYNAMICS OF CULTURAL CHANGE: HOP TU NAA AND HALLOWEEN.
- Authors
Sandle, Doug
- Abstract
The author explores the role of the folk custom Hop tu naa, often referred to as the Manx Halloween, as an agent for the expression and maintenance of Manxness in the Isle of Man. The author also examines the impact of wider forces of mass consumerism and globalisation that threaten to render the custom merely a pale variant of Halloween. Believing that the Isle of Man is in an anomalous constitutional position, the author stated that the British Crown Dependency is often left on the margins of historical discussions of the British Isles and their component identities.
