- Abstract
Water as one of the most important life sources of human kind was at the beginning a substance which people were afraid of and respected in respect to the "water cult." In the later stages water, together with many religions become to be known as a substance for purification from the sins in the Islam religion as well. This religious necessity clearly show itself with the baths comlexes that are situated next to the religious buildings. This fact prepares a base for the birth and development of a strong tradition around the baths. The culture which is formed around the baths in Turks, makes the baths to play an active role in the many public creations from proverbs, to phrasal verbs, folk stories, legend and folk tales. In this article the functions of baths in relation to the frequency of use in the Turkish folk tales will be evaluated under eleven headings: Washing in the baths, studying in the baths, building baths and receiving news, gathering in the baths and looking for signs, trapping through baths, birth in the baths, going to baths for hiding, changing shape by washing in the baths, treatment in the baths, match-making in the baths and bride baths.
