Patent drop reveals pressures on industry.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article focuses on the shrinking number of biotech patents approved in the United States. After the completion of the Human Genome Project and the 2000 biotech market bubble biotech patents started shrinking in number. A study by Association of University Technology Managers reveals that in the first half of 2003, DNA-related patent approvals declined by 17%, whereas the total number of U.S. patents approved increased by 1.6%. Also, one of the factors that has lead to the continuing diminution in the number of biotech patents is the "economic retrenchment" of biotech in early 2000.
