- Abstract
In the absence of work to analyze and reflect on the rich corpus of films of Fantastic Mexican Cinema of the new millennium in three areas, horror, science fiction and fantasy, the article provides a brief historical overview as a starting point for study. A task that seems significant because of the boom that has had with blockbusters and critically acclaimed, and the relevance achieved in national and international festivals. In revitalizing the macro-genre, marked by a transnational and global context, a considerable increase in production stands, made largely by debutants filmmakers who conquered a new market niche and offer some innovative proposals like a thematic and stylistic diversity. While a process of legitimation that broke with a history of contempt for the critics and the academy gave, due to the recognition obtained and the impact of the work of certain directors such as Guillermo Del Toro, who moves between the mainstream and authorship. The phenomenon is not unique to Mexico and the growth of this film category in other Latin American countries like Brazil, Chile, and particularly Argentina can be detected.
