- Abstract
In the article, the author discusses how reproduction and genetics are presented in the writings of Doris Lessing. She states that in her books which include, "Martha Quest," "The Four-Gated City," and "The Sweetest Dream," Lessing emphasizes on the disconnections and differences between mothers and daughters and stresses on the importance of adoptive or social motherhood. She says that in her novel, "The Fifth Child," Lessing pushes the theme of genetic discontinuity to its limit.
