- Abstract
This article reveals some components of the French-Canadian music industry and its links to Québec. We show that there are well-structured networks of production and musical diffusion in several communities of Canadian francophonie. Based on a typology describing five figures of success in the music industry, we show the success of French-Canadian artists and music industry standards. We also revisit the ambiguity related to the recognition of French-Canadian communities and their artists in Québec. On one hand, there is a tendency in the music industry and some media outlets to blend francophone Canadians into Québec culture. On the other hand, French-Canadian artists display a certain loyalty to their community of origin through their occasional return and participation in cultural initiatives that boost the local scene and inspire the next generation. We show that the impact of the success of French-Canadian artists in Québec on their community of origin is therefore more complex than it seems.
