- Abstract
The article explores the history of the Natchez Fire in 1940 in Natchez, Mississippi that caused the deaths of African American students at the Rhythm Club dance hall. The author uses photographs, interviews, and songs to explore the collective memory of tragedy among African Americans. Other topics include the reaction of African Americans in Chicago, Illinois, the role of blues music in commemoration, and mass graves.
