- Authors
Obrecht, Dean H.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the study about the perception of geminate consonants in Arabic language. The procedure involves the presentation of synthetic stimuli to investigate duration as a stimulus factor in the discrimination of single versus geminate consonants in the language. The contrasts in stops, nasals, and spirants phonetic classes were looked into. Analysis of the results indicates that duration appears to be more powerful cue in the case of nasals than stops. The study concludes that the structural status of gemination influences the sharpness of discrimination.
