- Authors
Luiz Schneider, Alberto
- Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reflect on the historical writing of Charles Boxer (1904-2000), with emphasis on his works about Portuguese America and South Atlantic in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although other texts will be considered, the analysis focuses primarily on the following books: Salvador de Sá and the Struggle for Brazil and Angola (1952), The Dutch in Brazil (1957), and The Golden Age of Brazil (1962). This article also intends to observe how Charles Boxer describes Colonial Brazil as part of the Portuguese empire. Furthermore, this article analyses how Boxer interacted with other Brazilian and Portuguese historians of his time, and evaluates the relevance and the repercussion of Boxer's work in contemporary historiography.
