- Abstract
This article examines proposed solutions to Haiti's severe food security problem. A literature review finds that most authors agree that neoliberal policies imposed on Haiti have weakened the country's agricultural sector and self-sufficiency. Some authors, however, note that other, structural elements contribute to food insecurity in Haiti. This article then critiques the call for protectionism as a solution to increase food self-sufficiency, arguing that protectionist policies are unrealistic and insufficient in the context of a) Haiti's dependence on the USA, the international financial institutions and other donors as well as b) underlying structural problems such as weak state and market capacity and environmental constraints.
