- Abstract
The novel Die Karriere der Doris Hart1 is Vicki Baum's act of defiance through story telling. The exiled Doris, shot by her lover, triumphs over poverty, alienation and damaged lungs to become an operatic diva. Doris' daily life show exile from the viewpoint of those whose struggling voices were not heard. Showing how sensory contacts with inanimate objects and with the natural world stabilise identity and reason threatened by incomprehensible events, Doris' triumphant progress is a savage attack on American values and an assertion of the transcendent power of a human will which exile has strengthened rather than diminished.
