- Abstract
From the mid-twentieth century onwards, rising catches from industrial deepsea fi shing gave reason to hope that suffi cient food could be obtained from the oceans for a growing world population, yet at the same time overfi shing turned out to be a global problem. After 1960 fi sheries research and the fi shing industry in the Federal Republic of Germany tried to achieve a more effi cient exploitation of the biological resources of the sea. The improvement of fi shing methods and fi shing strategies included more precise ranging of shoals, the search for new, economically interesting species and the exploration of previously unfrequented maritime regions and ocean depths. As part of this, two fi shing vessels undertook a research cruise into Pacifi c waters off Mexico in 1974/75 on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture. Overall, the actors involved spatially rearranged the ocean both horizontally and vertically. They planned and tested the mechanization of the marine environment, which in turn infl uenced the further design of fi shing technology by providing new insights into the oceans and new challenges resulting from the conditions in newly explored areas. However, these interactions in the 1970s were increasingly subject to changes in the political and legal framework for uses of the sea.
