- Abstract
A recent article in Anaesthesia examined the use of dexmedetomidine in adults undergoing heart valve surgery. The study found that while dexmedetomidine did not decrease the incidence of delirium in the first 7 postoperative days, it may impair renal function compared to a placebo. The authors suggest that factors such as the dose and duration of dexmedetomidine infusion, as well as the use of other sedative drugs, may influence the occurrence of postoperative delirium. They also note the need for stratified randomization and further analysis of patients lost to follow-up.
